Evelyn Rug

Evelyn Rug

From our Nantucket Collection. Named for Evelyn Street in 'Sconset, where in 1877 Edward Underhill built a cluster of little cottages modeled on the village's old fishing shacks and rented them to summer visitors. Before long, Broadway actors escaping the stifling heat of New York's summer theaters were renting these cottages too, and the lane became home to the famed 'Sconset Actors Colony, whose players went on to build the 'Sconset Casino and its summer stage.

The Evelyn Rug
Hand-knotted in India from pure wool, this piece is woven with a special technique that gives it a gently aged, antique character. Its design is drawn from a celebrated late-19th-century pattern, with bold scrolling vines and graceful palmettes reimagined in a soft, sun-washed palette, a fitting echo of the era when the actors first arrived.

Colors in Detail
The field is a warm sandy taupe, like the beach below the bluff at midday. Across it, vines curl in sky blue and shell ivory, with bold motifs in deep navy and hints of apricot and butter yellow like the first light of a 'Sconset sunrise. A dramatic border in deep navy and slate blue sweeps around the edge, traced with an ivory wave pattern and sand-colored palmettes like foam rolling in on the tide.
