Mike Bacle

For Mike Bacle, the sea has always been the compass. His formative years were spent navigating the waves, first as a surfer in Southern California, then along the shores of Virginia Beach, a lifelong immersion that informs his current artistry. He spends his summers exploring the rich history and landscape of Nantucket, then returns to the mainland for the winter; however, his creative attention remains firmly fixed on the enduring spirit of the island.

For more than twenty years, Bacle has carved whale sculptures influenced by the island’s whaling legacy. A visit to the Whaling Museum revealed how little of that history was represented in contemporary art, and he stepped in to fill the gap.

His signature white whales, carved from Cypress and finished with a subtly weathered patina, reflect his deep fascination with Nantucket’s early mariners and their mastery of the sea. Each piece carries a sense of time and tide, offering the quiet resonance of an object that feels both discovered and alive.

Bacle’s work brings the enduring spirit of the Atlantic into modern spaces with elegance, restraint, and reverence.
